"TAKE ME BACK HOME" EP denotes a new approach to the way Southern Brotherhood recorded their latest release: a studio effort.
The band's debut album, "MAGIC CARPET RIDE", a full 12-track album, which released on 21/12/2012 was recorded entirely live in studio and released free of charge as a download from Bandcamp and with a limited number of CDs pressed.
During the new writing phase, the band felt the need to expand their sound and come up with a more polished release by adding additional instruments into the mix: lap steel guitars, bass, electric guitars, tambourine, harmonica & shakers, making it into a bigger sound experience. This of course added to the complexity and a lengthier effort.
"TAKE ME BACK HOME" was initially intended as a single release, encompassing two tracks: "Take Me Back Home" (written by Andy De Rosa) and "You Are The Reason I'm Here" (written by Jeff Kirkham). The band then decided to put in the extra effort and record one of their initial instrumentals "Old Country Boy's Dream" which has been played live several times, but never properly recorded. At the same time Jeff came up with the "absurd yet clever" idea of "Return To Alabama", based on the original instrumental "Alabama" (track no. 8 on their debut album) and turning that into more of a song, with lyrics and blistering electric guitar riffs and solos (played by Andy), moody lap steel (played by Jeff) and demonstrating another side of the band's musical skills.
"Take Me Back Home" is a song about the need to escape this world and to be back in your space, your home life, your loved ones. "Return To Alabama" follows on with the theme set by track 1 with some intentional tongue-in-cheek references to the Southern classic epic "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Old Country Boy's Dream" is an interpretation of nature, landscape, and captures the sounds of the local rural lifestyle, just close your eyes and see it for yourself. "You Are The Reason I'm Here" is a truly beautiful love song, written by Jeff to his wife Shelley, very straight from the heart and exceptionally personal.
The EP has worked as a launching pad for the new approach the band takes into recording future records: you will still hear acoustic, stripped- down versions of each of the songs during their live sets, but in order to compete with the music market, the band believes this to be the way to cut it through the media broadcasting queues.
Southern Brotherhood are:

"Magic Carpet Ride" is the debut album from Bournemouth-based (UK) acoustic duo SOUTHERN BROTHERHOOD.
The band formed in February 2012 when two long-term friends Jeff Kirkham and Andy De Rosa decided to get together to see if there was a joined musical path to take. They started off playing exclusively covers to build their confidence together and starting to gig as soon as they could. They also recorded a 4-track live demo a few weeks into rehearsals which helped them with getting gigs.
The spring/summer of 2012 turned out to be a busy period, performing at over 20 gigs, including major festivals in the Dorset area, such as Wimborne Folk Festival, Oxjam Bournemouth & LionFest 2012.
With over 3 hours worth of covers, they started introducing 2 or 3 originals in the sets, and having seen the reaction from the audiences, decided to set aside September 2012 to write a full album together. Both steeped in Americana, Roots, Psychedelic Rock, Blues and good old-fashioned R&B and Rock 'N' Roll and luckily had a common platform on which to start writing songs: Jeff and Andy both play guitars and sing harmonies, both equally co-wrote this release and before you knew it they had more songs than needed to release this record.
October and November 2012 have been spent on-and-off in the studio, recording tracks such as "Magic Carpet Ride", "Berry Blue", "Give It Back Next Time", "Sorry Friend", "Right Back Where We Started", "Winter Blues" & "Big Man". The record is complete and they have booked gigs promoting this release all across Dorset.
Southern Brotherhood decided to release it free of charge as download on Bandcamp (details to follow in due course), so the price is set to "0.00", but you also have an option to pay what you think it's worth and this will help the band with following the digital release also on physical CD copies in the future. These will be sold exclusively at gigs and used as promo materials, although a limited number of copies will be set aside for those hardcore fans outside the UK who can't purchase them face-to-face at gigs. If you wish to order a CD copy then please use the Contact Form on our "Contact" page with your details. Paypal payments only accepted.
